10 Advices to Help You Instill Network
Security in Your Corporation
Nizamettin Meral, Teknoser Network and Security Solutions Manager, evaluated cyber
attacks against corporations and how to prevent them. Pointing out internal attacks are
more common than those from outside, Meral insisted it is possible to prevent or get
over any attack, giving 10 advices for corporations who seek measure.
According to Nizamettin Meral, Teknoser Network and Security Solutions Manager, cyber threats evolve in
the course of time; nevertheless, important steps are taken regarding IT security as well: “In comparison
with the situation a few years ago, many revolutionary improvements are now in use regarding security
in terms of technology, methodology and hardware.”
Nizamettin Meral divides the threatening attacks on information security in two, as internal and external
attacks, adding that “External attacks often draw more attention; however, cyber attacks from inside are
much more common in percentage. Very few of internal attacks are malevolent and deliberate. Mostly,
they come true due to unconsciousness of users, insufficient corporate security policies and shortage in
infrastructure.”
Prohibitions and denials are not the solution
Meral emphasizes that prohibitions and access denials cannot be as effective as expected for attack
prevention: “Today, it is no more a ‘trend topic’ to base informatics security on denial of social media
platforms or such prohibitions. The important thing is to ensure network access at any time by any device
to the source and point allowed pursuant to security policies. Remember; corporations which give a place
to security policies and practices will always be one step ahead.”
According to Nizamettin Meral, if corporations want to prevent internal and external cyber attacks and get
over them without harm, they should seek specialist assistance: “It is possible to receive support of
system integrator companies specialized on security consultancy. Today, even many system integrator
companies have difficulty in rendering basic network and infrastructure services at a healthy and
sustainable level; therefore, it is hardly an advisable methodology for corporations to solve such problems
on their own.”
Advices by Meral for corporations are as follows:

In course of preparing plans and projects on informatics security, remember that networks no
more exclusively consist of computers. Any device, including tablets and smart phones can
participate in your corporate network at anytime and anywhere.

Always keep the operating systems on your PCs up-to-date.

Use antivirus software.

Use a 802.1x or higher Network Access Control solution.

Make use of Data Loss Prevention (DLP) solutions so as to prevent leakage of critical data.

Use e-mail security products.

Use in your network solutions that carry out constant monitoring, data analyses and that report
anomalies in traffic.

Ensure soft or physical isolation of critical data and networks.

Collect system-related and network data/logs, and use software that generate significant
comments.


management and security policy certification programs that make such products significant.
